How do I know if a job made money?
Take the price the customer paid and subtract everything the job consumed: crew hours at their loaded cost, materials, fuel and drive time, and the card processing fee. What is left is the job profit, and dividing that by the price gives the margin. Most service businesses aim for 20 percent or better, and jobs under 10 percent usually mean the estimate missed the drive time.

Should I count drive time as a cost?
Yes. Drive time is paid crew hours plus fuel and wear on the truck, and it is the single most common reason a job that looked profitable was not. A crew driving 90 minutes round trip for a two hour job spends nearly half its day unbilled.
What counts as the loaded cost of a crew hour?
The wage plus payroll taxes, workers comp, and benefits. A $25 an hour tech usually costs $32 to $38 an hour once those are added, so costing at the wage alone overstates your margin by ten points or more.
Do card fees really change the math?
On a $650 job at 2.9 percent plus 30 cents, the fee is about $19. That is small on one job and real across a year, and it is why the break-even price here already accounts for the percentage scaling with the price.
